Pre-Fall 2011: Burberry Prorsum

Cohesion was the word of the day on Thursday when Burberry Prorsum revealed its Pre-Fall 2011 Collection in New York City. From fur coats and army green suits to puffy outerwear and evening gowns, Christopher Bailey’s team conjured up every necessity for a modern woman’s wardrobe.

Women weren’t the only ones benefitting from the extensive and intelligently curated collection. Men were part of the action as well, rocking in orange trench coats and plaid blazers.

During a time when excessiveness and material appreciation is being looked at through a new lens, Burberry Prorsum told the fashion public what they needed to hear: Fashion is important.

Its multicolored fur coat (possibly mink), in a gray-purple hue, was awe-inspiring in its ability to take on the life of an animal print with a range of colors visible.

Fur, as usual, was an accessory to the collection of style staples. Literally every piece, in some form or another, could be considered a essential addition to a woman’s clothing collection – whether she’s a banker in London or an ad exec in Los Angeles. Who doesn’t need a suit, a bit of fur, a trench or one perfect gown?

Burberry’s ability to indulge, however, wasn’t thrown out the window either. Fur was playfully placed at cuffs, on the collars of men’s suits and on the skirt of a gorgeous ivory coat.

Pleated silk skirts dominated women’s evening wear in florals, neutrals and jewel tones. A black dress, cinched together with a leather belt, will surely fly off Burberry’s racks, as it gracefully embraces the body, yet shows off the sumptuous fabric at the same time.

The menswear, which was exhibited less, was a subtle combination of classic, casual and rugged. Sherpa-lined coats made a debut, a look that’s been in with the ladies for a while. Reinterpretations of men’s classics – such as corduroys and tweeds – were seen in long trench coats and military-inspired cuts. A velvet-lined coat mixed things up a bit, using an on-trend fabric in a new way.
