Pre-Fall 2011: Zac Posen

As always, Pre-Fall collections are a chance for designers to let down their guards. With no catwalk to constrain them, the shoots can be fun and whimsical – even avant-garde.

Zac Posen took full advantage with his sexy, edgy shoot for Pre-Fall 2011 on Tuesday. Models arched and contorted their bodies in exaggerated poses, mocking the scared straight position they take on the runways. Garish eye shadow, in shades of shining blues and greens, complemented the collection’s undersea tones. Instead of a far distance from the camera, the looks were shot up close and incredibly personal. Every button could be counted, and no facial expression went unnoticed.

Speaking of models, one of the faces might look familiar. Crystal Renn, the famous “full-figured” model that recently received attention for dropping weight, is visible in a third of the looks (in the bright blue dress above).

Compared to Posen’s last two shows in Paris (Spring 2011) and New York (Fall 2010), Pre-Fall was remarkably less niche. No excessive accouterments or overwhelming color palettes, Pre-Fall seemed as if a universal collection; there isn’t a piece that a lady wouldn’t like.

Tweed suits were form-fitting yet business appropriate, even in a blue animal print. Leather accented many of the looks: a trim on a skirt or laser-cut detailing on an arm. The fur, however, was the show-stopper. In varying tones of browns, the coat looked like something the boho chic Ali McGraw of the ‘70s would don.

The laser-cut detailing also became a trend within itself in the collection, showing up on the trims of coats and dresses and adding a remarkable level of craftsmanship to the pieces.

Dresses were structured, gorgeously cut with interesting construction techniques: a pleated skirt with feathers, a blocked dress, space-agey patches.

Which is your favorite?
