Pre-Fall 2012: Alexander Wang

You can always count on Alexander Wang to impress with his effortless, cool vibes. It seems as if fashion’s boy wonder can turn any ounce of inspiration into the next biggest fashion must-have. For Spring, he gave us a NASCAR and BMX racing-inspired collection that had all the fashionistas craving feminine peplums and tough motorcycle helmets – in the same outfit. For Pre-Fall, Wang looked to men’s clothing once again for a little stimulus, this time creating polished and suited-up menswear styles.

The collection still showed little notes of sportiness that seem to bleed from Spring – mainly the six-pocket vests with exposed zippers and the mesh materials – but it featured a much more tailored style than last season. It displayed a series of strict lines with pencil skirts, slim and cropped trousers, and boxy blazers crafted from a mix of menswear materials. The line embraced the chic Wang office girl look.

The simple pieces of apparel and basic materials may sound like average office wear, but if you are familiar with Wang, you know there is nothing traditional about his detailing and styling. In fact, the designer transformed menswear’s classic houndstooth and plaids into sheer burnout sweaters and knitted dresses, while jackets had a layer of transparent mesh and were slit at the collar and lapels. Miniskirts were layered over fitted dresses and trousers, and cropped vests and jackets were finished with removable harnesses. A few evening looks updated Wang’s body-conscious wrapped jersey dresses, exhibited in bold red, white and chocolate and perfect for an after-work cocktail party.

As much as we expect a certain coolness from Wang, we also expect lust-worthy accessories and footwear. It seems the designer was familiar with this expectation and didn’t disappoint. Leather clutches were actually transformed sunglass cases in oversized and exaggerated proportions, and mesh booties appeared like old-fashioned seamed pantyhose. LadyLUX predicts the ankle-strap, cutout cuffed pumps will be highly sought after come Pre-Fall.

Just a few months shy from his new Beijing store opening, Wang continues to build his empire and a fan base that proves his downtown style has become a global fashion fascination. But with his Rocco bag displayed on nearly every girl in the fashion industry, plus his laidback styling and sold-out shoes, are we that surprised?
