Pre-Fall 2012: Helmut Lang

It’s always fun when designers draw inspiration from unique places. Art work, various eras and unchartered countries tend to be easy go-to favorites. For Pre-Fall 2012, the husband-and-wife team behind Helmut Lang discovered influence from photos of spider webs. But they weren’t just any old webs; instead, they were created by spiders on drugs, reported Style.com. Apparently, an eight-legged creature on LSD will create an intricate web, while one who has ingested marijuana will have a web with big holes. It was, however, a spider on caffeine that spun the most interesting and erratic web, which became the main focus of Michael and Nicole Colovos’ collection.

The spider’s creativity worked well for the design duo. They are fans of a little darkness, black-on-black-on-black and all things progressive. The webs surfaced in the collection as a tonal print on skinny jeans and as a burnout motif on sweaters and sleeves of open-weave knits. Jersey dresses and skirts discovered the fluid, draped lines of the spider web. Adding an obvious cool factor to the collection, these pieces were enhanced by asymmetrical hemlines and layered over straight lines of skinny pants for contrast.

Alongside the webs, the Colovos created their usual edgy, streamlined-meets-draped silhouette blueprint, which looked refreshed for Pre-Fall. The newness came from textured gray leather, used in a modern motorcycle jacket, abstract fractal prints on lightweight silk and a sprinkling of lime green – yes, Helmut Lang in lime green. The pastel tone was a light, unsaturated shade that nicely complemented with dove gray sharp-shoulder jackets and blazers. But don’t worry. Just because there was lime doesn’t mean the pair forgot about black. The collection opened and ended with clean black ensembles with variations of the jacket, in draped and structured forms, and styled with fitted pants or tapered trousers.

Able to mix and match the separates for different looks, the Helmut Lang client will be easily excited by all that Pre-Fall has to offer. Also exciting: The duo will be launching a T-shirt line called “Helmut” that focuses on some of the designers’ past favorite designs. Bonus – it starts at about $95.
