Recipe RX Delivers Personalized Nutrition To Combat Health Problems

What we eat every day directly impacts our health and longevity. Serious illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes have both been linked with poor eating habits. With this common knowledge, many of us make an effort to navigate the deluge of nutrition advice out there to make healthier choices at mealtime, maybe eating more vegetables or opting for whole foods over processed products. Camille Macres, founder of Recipe RX, shows us that this is only scratching the surface.

Macres believes that a carefully managed diet can be a key strategy to overcoming a wide array of health issues, from life-threatening diseases to everyday ailments including PMS, acne and headaches. The problem is that most of us don’t have the expertise to tailor our diets for optimal health or the kitchen skills to create satisfying recipes from a restrictive food set. Recipe RX—a website that combines Macres’ experience as a professional chef with her passion for teaching others how to achieve better health—seeks to change this.

For $10 per month, Recipe RX allows users to plug in their diet needs and preferences, including food allergies, gluten intolerance or vegetarianism, and select anything they might be suffering from. In addition to the issues mentioned above, the site covers everything from psychiatric conditions such as depression and anxiety, to problems like IBS, high cholesterol, hypothyroidism and Crohn’s disease. Finally, users select foods that they like and dislike, and receive a list of recipes that are tailored specifically to them. The site then allows users to create a meal calendar of recipes for their upcoming week, and creates a shopping list to take on the go.

The site has proven to be a useful resource for busy moms dealing with child allergies, for example, and others who are just looking for a more natural way to address their health issues. Macres believes that before relying on drugs to solve every symptom, people should take a close look at what’s in their fridge. Recipe RX is designed to enable everyone to do this successfully.

“My vision was always to be able to take complicated and sophisticated things about health and deliver them to people in a way that is simple and straight forward and meets them in the day to day of their hectic lives,” Macres explains.

As people have started to think of diet strategy as more than just a weight loss tool, many have seen impressive results. Macres reports Recipe RX users who experience greater energy levels and freedom from annoying symptoms they have been suffering from for a lifetime.

“I’ve had several women who have dealt with hormonal issues and PMS stuff for decades and when they started actually following the recommendations outlined in Recipe RX, have actually seen that stuff disappear. I really believe that food is your best medicine for everything,” she says.

Seeing these results is Macres’ biggest motivation, and she has worked hard to get here. Working as a private chef to families with dietary restrictions, Macres enjoyed the challenge of making gluten-free, dairy-free or soy-free food as delicious and satisfying as more mainstream diets. Yet, she knew these were widespread concerns and wanted to be able to reach a greater number of people. With her website, she is thinking big. “My commitment is to reach 100 million people in my lifetime,” she says.

In addition to Recipe RX, she also teaches cooking classes in the San Diego area, is developing a series of virtual cooking classes through Google Hangouts, and has written a cookbook, “Paleogasm.”

Discussing the book, Macres says, “The reason why I think this cookbook is for everybody, regardless if you eat paleo or don’t eat paleo, is the recipes are delicious…They’re satisfying, they’re satiating, they’re creative and they leave you feeling good. They don’t leave you feeling hungover like a lot of yummy food does.”

She was kind enough to share a favorite recipe from “Paleogasm” with LadyLUX. Give her No-Corn-Bread Muffins a whirl for breakfast or as an afternoon snack!

No-Corn-Bread Muffins

I adore these with a slather of salted Irish butter and Homemade Pumpkin Butter. Or on my Fried Chicken Salad. Yummola. Who needs corn? It’s so…corny.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup coconut flour
1/2 cup coconut oil or butter, melted
4 eggs
2 tablespoon unsweetened applesauce
2 tablespoon raw honey
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
½ teaspoon salt

Preheat the oven to 350. Line muffin cups with liners. Mix together the coconut flour and oil into a paste, then beat in the eggs until smooth. Add the remaining ingredients and stir well. Divide between the prepared cups and bake about 25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean and the top springs back when lightly pressed.

Makes 12 muffins.
