Shoppers head toward high-end purchases: what customers are buying this season

Considering the tough economic times, it may be surprising to learn that a number of holiday shoppers are still interested indulging themselves and those on their holiday list with items worth more than $1,000.

According to a spot check across 16 stores, many customers are still headed toward those pricy options, while numerous others choose to watch that budget. Whether after the more affordable or the more luxe, however, consumers are most interested in versatile styles.

Outerwear is particularly attracting interest, such as Bogner’s $1,299 Freda-D feather-light down jacket or Bloomingdale’s Moncler jackets (from $795 to $1,900).

What else is drawing the crowds?

Customers are scooping up J. Mendel’s $3,895 sleeveless sequined, deep brown wool dress with Finn raccoon trim. Another fav is Dennis Basso’s reversible suede mink coat with mink detailing on the suede side, retailing for $18,500.

“This particular style has no age barrier,” Basso told WWD of the coat.

Consumers checking out Saks Fifth Avenue gravitated to a little black cocktail dress by Donna Karan – a store exclusive for $1,695.

Vera Wang has also been scoring consumer interest, particularly for her $595 pink cardigan with tulle underlay and an $895 necklace made of crystal tubes. “It combines rock and roll with full-on bling in a modern, sophisticated way,” said Wang of her jewelry piece. Also, love the movement!”

Whatever your cup of tea, there are bargains and splurges available for all.
