Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear: Tops

Pretty sure that when designers were working on collections this season, they were actually plotting on how to leverage the female shop-a-holics population to pull the nation out of recession. Across every category, designers created an amazing wide variety of options and tops are no exception. So when it’s time to update your wardrobe with the new spring tops, you’re going to want to bring the credit card. And bring backup.
Crop Tops

There have been sightings of crop tops on the street and now the runways are joining in for some 90’s fun. The midriff-baring top has turned stylish in leathers, sheers, jersey and cottons. Crop tops are perfect for high-waist pants or skirts and look best as tanks or with shorten sleeves. Don’t forget your fanny pack.

Tees

The tee has come a long way from the basic white shirt. Designers took the staple silhouette and updated the look with new stiff or sheer materials, an architectural spin, bold shoulders, and longer lengths that work well with leggings or tucked in. Sleeves were shown cuffed or exaggerated. Necklines were shown in cowl, boat, or lowcut.

Corset

Runway is bringing sexy out from underneath. Corsets and bras worn as tops or as layers were shown by a handful of designers including Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, and Versace. Structure was key for fit and comfort. Corsets were shown in everything from lace for the lingerie look to casual khaki.

Draped

Draped tops continue into the upcoming season with its effortless chicness. Designers created overstated cowl necks, ruched pieces and asymmetrical shoulders for heighten drama. Update any outfit with structural or relaxed draped tops in prints or solids.

Ruffled

Spring is the time to get yourself in a ruffle. Ruffled tops that is. Ruffles have been present in apparel and accessories for the past season, and don’t seem to be going anywhere. Perfect for embellishing necklines or sleeves, ruffles work well in volume singles or multiple of tiers. Looks can vary from ladylike to edgy biker.

Embellished

Last season the embellishment du jour was studs. This season we move forward with sequins, beading and appliqués. Embellishment was used to create unique patterns or as an all-over effect. Metallic and shiny pieces were key. Tees and tanks become dressier and can go from day to night.

Asymmetrical

The asymmetrical goddess look has caught on and is a staple for Spring 2010. Tops are shown with one-shoulder or one-sleeve options. Pieces were sleek and architectural or draped and romantic. Once again, exaggerated cowl necks make an appearance and add to the asymmetry. Origami folds, bows, and single gloves add to the effect. Asymmetrical tops looks cleanest in solid colors.
