Third Annual Hands Across Sand to be held on Aug. 4

This Saturday, Aug. 4, marks the Third Annual Hands Across the Sand event where ocean activists will join hands to oppose offshore drilling and support alternative energy sources. At 12 noon across America, activists will stand in a line, join hands for fifteen minutes and leave their footprints on beaches and parks to unite for this cause.

First founded in 2009 by Dave Rauschkolb, Hands Across the Sand is an international grassroots event that focuses on directing America’s energy policy away from offshore drilling and towards a new energy plan incorporating clean, renewable resources and encouraging conservation.

“There is no such thing as cleaning up an oil spill. We are all complicit in the slow death we are inflicting on our oceans and earth. We must join hands and weave a thread of balance and wisdom for our planet,” said Rauschkolb. “We have done our damage. We now have the power to undo and together, build a clean energy path that sustains us all. There is no more important issue we must focus on as humans. Join hands with us on August 4 all over the world!”

With thirteen countries and thirty-two states holding events to date, Hands Across the Sand is making a difference around the world. Now, anyone can download tools from the website to create their own event and join hands with their friends and neighbors at 12 noon in all world time zones. The event begins in New Zealand and ends in Hawaii.

As an official sponsor of the event, the Surfrider Foundation and its activists are also joining in on the event to promote awareness of “Three Essential Truths” about new offshore drilling. They are spreading the word that offshore drilling will not reduce the price at gas pumps, it will not eliminate America’s reliance on foreign oil and it is a very risky activity that negatively effects the environment during every stage of the drilling process.

“The political discourse regarding offshore drilling continues to be heavy on rhetoric and light on facts. We challenge all elected officials to acknowledge these three essential truths when discussing any new offshore drilling proposals,” said Peter Stauffer, Surfrider Foundation’s ocean ecosystem manager. “We are confident that facing the facts about offshore drilling will show that offshore drilling is not the answer to our energy needs.”
