Fall 2012 trends: geometric and ‘70s graphic prints

Prints have been around for seasons and, while they’re not going anywhere just yet, they are evolving. For Fall 2012, prints took on a graphic note and dove into the ‘70s for a little geometric fun. Designers showed retro silhouette ensembles in head-to-toe patterns with robust colors, creating an unseen aesthetic. Heavy jackets and tunics were paired with slim pants, as demonstrated on the runways of Prada and Miu Miu. Dive head first into the Fall trend with monochrome graphic print looks or, for just a splash, combine pieces with solid colors.

Marc by Marc Jacobs shows off a dizzyingly playful print in the Katya print blouse. The silk top boasts an ivory grey, red, blue and midnight blue graphic pattern and is detailed with a tie-neck. Add to the throwback vibe by teaming it up with red pleated trousers and pumps. Finish the look with a polished, ladylike handbag.

Diane von Furstenberg gives the houndstooth Melissa skirt a fresh twist with eye-popping colors. The orange and blue pattern is lively and can be enhanced when mismatched with a green sweater or yellow v-neck. Ground the outfit with black ankle booties and oversized shades.

In a mellow black and white look, Rebecca Minkoff presents the Kalahari pants with a jagged diamond print. The slouchy pants juxtapose the graphic print with graduated stripes riding down the sides. Style the pants with a white v-neck tee and a brightly colored blazer to amp up the vibe.

Tibi plays with jacquards on a classic A-line shift dress. The mustard colored style contrasts diamond shapes with a striped bodice for a chic look. Step into heeled or flat oxfords to present a preppy attitude.

3.1 Phillip Lim creates a graphic pattern with a puzzle piece effect. In blue, teal, slate grey and aqua, the pullover knit feels bold yet neutral all at once. Couple the jumper with cool colored cropped pants or a black leather pencil skirt. Add on lace-up wedge boots to seal the deal.

Prada’s Tessuto jacquard handbag allows a pop of geometric in every outfit. The nylon material stands out against gold hardware and white leather trims. Bring interest to everyday looks of denim or workwear with the boxy handbag.

Miu Miu fashions a unique graphic repeat with a hot pink, khaki brown, royal blue and black pattern. The 7/8 trousers are cropped to project a retro feel. Combine with a pink t-shirt to satisfy the head-to-toe idea or go relaxed with a white top. Toss on gold accessories to finish the ensemble with a little lux.

Manolo Blahnik takes the trend a step further by layering prints and mixing in a rhinestone buckle. The Algona velvet pump is decidedly different with its abstract pattern in plum and lilac. Style the classy footwear with tailored silhouettes of trousers and necktie button-ups. Consider the berry shade as a neutral to pair with a jewel tones or brights.
