‘Life in Art’: The Fourth Plinth London Project by Antony Gormley
LUXies, famous Britain sculptor, Antony Gormley has initiated an art experiment to take place for the next 100 days, 24 hours a day in London’s Trafalgar Square!! The focus is to create one of the largest ‘living monuments’ ever created to capture a moment in history by the view of the people. Unique, Interactive and Powerful—definitely LUX!! ![]()
The Majestic Trafalgar Square has four large pillars and one is normally reserved for showcasing different statues of King, Generals, or special works of art each year. Gormley has reserved this space on the Forth Plinth to become the ultimate stage for a living art exhibit ‘representing of the whole of humanity.’
Although this living art project is the mastermind of Gormley, it’s success is ultimately at the hands of the community’s involvement to enlists those that are passionate about sharing something for the whole world to see!!
By partnering with SkyArts, the Fourth Plinth will be monitored around the clock to allow access to anyone at anytime to be a part of this human art experiment! Embracing technology has greatly raised the profile of this art exhibit and just might contribute to it becoming a global phenomenon!! So, be a part of this once in a lifetime human experiment and check it out for yourself LUXies!!! Do you think it is a LUX-hit or miss?? ![]()
“One & Other will be a picture, or representation, of a very different kind from the statues around the square or the paintings in the National Gallery. It is not about myths, power or privilege, nor about war and certainly not about death – it is an opportunity to look at life. The making of this living monument has changed through the participation of its makers; the ‘Plinthers’ as they have come to be known. It is amazing how quickly the idea took hold – it started as a relatively simple idea but now in becoming real it has an energy and vitality all of its own.” –says Antony Gormley in the official Press Release.
As of now, there have been 26, 115 applications submitted from mothers, to students to traditional artists and dancers. The variety of people attracted to this project and the number of applicants to date clearly demonstrates the impact of this project.
Launched on July 6th, this project will ultimately select 2,400 people by random computer algorithm to showcase over the course of the art exhibit. To qualify, each ‘live art’ applicant must be a resident of the United Kingdom and be over 16 years old. You can peak in at anytime on live web stream at the One & Other website!!
So LUX Nation, what do you think about this ‘One and Other’ project?? If you had this visible platform for an hour, what would you be inspired to share?
