NYFW Spring 2012: Alexander Wang

The young, cool Alexander Wang is known for chic, downtown vibes with a masculine touch and an understated edginess. He’s created epic collection after epic collection, finding inspiration in the most unlikely places. For Spring 2012, Wang has outdone himself once again, bringing the speedy racetracks of NASCAR and motocross to the New York runway, reported Style.com.

The sporty-chic collection was broken into “gangs,” each inspired by different aspects of racing. Wang molded looks from racing suits using zipper pocket details and skintight silhouettes – to decrease air resistance on the catwalk, naturally.

The show started with a series of athletic, dark mesh bombers layered over polos in bright oranges, purples and blues. The colors peeked through the mesh for a sharp contrast.

The mesh gang was followed with black and blue shades of floral cargo suits with pockets that created a peplum silhouette. Ranging from dresses to jackets with skirts and one-piece jumpers, Wang used the blue and black floral print in blocked sections with accenting white zippers. Black, deep burgundy and blue velvet cargo looks complemented the florals.

Next to work the runway were sleek racing suits with knee-length bike shorts and high-waisted leggings. The “gang” started with a dark palette of green and burgundy and worked its way to whites with colorful accents. Wang detailed the group by creating a pattern that at first glance could be mistaken for a tribal-inspired look, but is actually cleverly configured racing treads, racing stripes, and stadium seating maps. The patterns covered the racing suits’ tops, sleeves and leggings.

The show closed with leather laser-cut dresses and skirts embellished with gunmetal grommets and sheer jersey dresses. The pattern of the grommets mimicked the mesh of the first group, adding cohesion to the collection. The sheer jerseys were worn over one-piece bodysuits with the stadium seating map centered in the front.

Adding to the intricate details, models were styled with leather and mesh handkerchiefs tied around their necks or over their hair, inspired by the flag girls from the racetracks. Wang also incorporated other accessory touches from the speedway, including helmets, bucket bags, drawstring backpacks and wet-matted helmet hair.

Wang continues to design must-have footwear, this season creating choked-up pointy-toe pumps with thick ankle straps. The ‘90s-throwback pump, with a slightly lower heel, was shown in a fresh white and heavily textured reptilian skin.

The racing-inspired collection proved to be cohesive and imaginative, yet also very wearable with an instant cool factor – which is oh-so signature of Wang.
