Oslo Fashion Week goes animal-friendly with fur ban
In a step forward for animals everywhere, Oslo Fashion Week has declared a ban on all furs in its runway shows.
The change was sparked by anti-fur effort Mote Mot Pels (Fashion Against Fur), which gathered more than 220 of the Norwegian fashion elite together to rally against using animal pelts on the catwalk.
The list of those supporting the cause include designers Leila Hafzi, Thomas Ryen of Undorn and John Erling Vinnem of JohnnyLove, plus Norwegian Elle, Norwegian Cosmopolitan, KK and Det Nye.
“It has been a very natural choice for us because we do not want [Oslo Fashion Week] to appear as an arena in which to promote products based on the treatment of animals [as] prohibited by animal welfare concerns in several countries,” Paul Vasbotten, general manager of the Oslo Fashion Week, told The Huffington Post.
But while Norway is taking the plunge, Denmark is still on the sidelines, with apparently no intention of following suit. Eva Kruse, chief executive of Copenhagen Fashion Week, told Ecouterre, “We believe that fur is a central part of fashion and we have no plans to ban fur from Copenhagen Fashion Week.”
She adds, “If fur farms are shut down in Norway, the production would just move to other countries like China. Then we will lose all control of how animals are treated.”
Olso’s is the first fashion week to establish such a ban.
