Alexander McQueen to be honored at Met

This May, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will commemorate the late designer Alexander McQueen with a special exhibit—Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty—that follows his career through a 100 examples of his designs.

The exhibit will feature his graduate collection from the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London and the two decades of acclaimed success that followed, according to WWD.

Running from May 4 to July 31, the show will focus on the innovative techniques that McQueen became synonymous with, such as nontraditional perspectives, and the creative social and political commentary he made with his designs.

“After McQueen’s death, we wanted to stage an exhibition to celebrate his legacy in fashion history and his contributions to fashion,” curator Andrew Bolton told WWD. “We want to get across two elements — the spectacle of the runway presentations and the beauty of his craftsmanship.”

Besides McQueen’s London archives, the show also will showcase pieces from Givenchy, the Costume Institute and the personal collections of the late Isabella Blow.

The exhibit is arranged thematically, not chronologically, because Bolton said he did not want to create a retrospective. Rather, it is constructed to look at the different styles and periods the designer experienced during his career.

The show will open in conjunction with The Costume Institute Benefit Gala on May 2.
