Biotech Firm, Genencor, Creates New Green ‘Jeans’

Eco-tech continues to make huge strides in the fashion industry both aesthetically and for the good of our planet.

Most recently the biotechnology firm, Genencor added a new procedure to their PrimaGreen suite of products. This addition allows for green denim to be the way of the future, utilizing environmentally friendly techniques that allow for eco-jeans to be affordable and fashion-forward!

‘Examining the 2006 production year for jeans headed to the U.S. market, Levi Strauss & Co. found that making one pair of 501s required almost 920 gallons of water, 400 megajoules of energy and expelled 32 kilograms of carbon dioxide. Levi’s said this was equivalent to running a garden hose for 106 minutes, driving 78 miles and powering a computer for 556 hours.’ –WWD.com.

The PrimaGreen technique utilizes natural enzymes to create the worn-look of denim and other fashionable styles, without the chemical process. This new eco-technique will allow for the same effects on our clothing, while minimizing the environmental impact we currently engage in.

The new product called ‘PrimaGreen EcoLight 1’ is a biodegradable enzyme that allows for vintage styled denim that’ll allow eco-jeans to be the norm of the future. Advances such as these will allow fashion designers and manufacturers much more effective options than ever before.

As for fashion, the market will continue to drive the demand. The question is whether customers would be impacted by major brands shifting to more green approaches. Would this actually help their business? Would knowing the jeans manufacturing processes influence your decision to buy one pair of jeans over another?

What do you think LUX-fashionistas? Would you be more likely to purchase to eco-jeans knowing they’ve helped our planet and were fashion-forward?
