Help Sanitize the World’s Water, Watch this Video

Today is International World Water Day, a day established in 1993 by the United Nations to bring attention to the importance of sanitary water and the issues surrounding sustaining freshwater resources. Currently one in six people on the planet do not have access to clean drinking water and this lack of sanitation causes 80% of all sickness and disease, killing more people in a year than all forms of violence combined.

This years theme is transboundary water as all nations have water needs to satisfy from limited resources, many of these waters cross international borders. Today’s focus is on continuing to nurture opportunities to cooperate in the 263 transboundary lakes and river basins that span and connect 145 countries. Past themes include issues such as sanitation and coping with scarcity.

What can you do today? Watch the video above and Brian Cooper from A Glimmer of Hope will donate a penny to charity:water. Turn off the water when brushing your teeth. Shorten your shower time. Skip watering the lawn. Small changes such as these make a major impact, especially if we are all modifying our behaviors and thinking more globally. Learn more about this day and other ways to contribute to bringing clean water to the world by visiting World Water Day’s official website.
