Make Finding ‘Organic Wines’ Easy

Soon all wine lovers will have the easiest time selecting a California-grown wine that supports the more sustainable and eco-friendly approaches thanks to the Wine Institute!

Meeting their Mission “to initiate and advocate public policy that enhances the ability to responsibly produce, promote and enjoy wine.” This new initiative is ideal for advancing the industry towards much greener practices.

The aim of the Wine Institute is to launch a new certification program called: ‘Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing Program.’ This third party program is aimed to ensure that we, the consumers, will have access to viable information regarding the wines we currently drink. It’ll also provide us all with the option to utilize our consumer power to support only sustainable vineyards, thus reducing the adverse impact on our planet as well as our palettes!

“People do want to know that the products they purchase are grown and produced in some sort of sustainable fashion. Our expectation is it will become even more important in the future.” –says Chris Savage, director of environmental affairs at Gallo Wines.

The standards for this certification will include: no pesticides are used, a reduction of waste and energy use, provides workers with health insurance and are ‘mindful’ of non-agricultural neighbors.

Even more LUX is that 62% of all wine producers in California have opted in for the new program! This is wonderful news and definitely shows the power of consumer knowledge influencing good business practices! Not to mention, California is the fourth largest region for wine producing in the world, so this aims to set the bar for the industry going completely ‘green.’

As of now, the only way you can find out who’ll make the cut is to do your own homework before hand. Unfortunately, at this point there isn’t a ‘ready’ label on the actual bottle just yet. Though, with all change it takes time, and we definitely think this is a HUGE step in the right direction.

What do you think LUXies? Does knowing a wine is organic and produced using sustainable practices impact your decision to buy or not to buy?
