New app offers a daily dose of peace and love

In our difficult times, we could all use a little peace and love. Especially if it comes free and delivered to your smartphone daily. Poet and designer Thomas Hillman has created a new app, Embody Peace and Love, that will have you feeling as if you have landed back in the 1960s, or at least give you a positive start to your day. Full of poetic writings and motivational quotes, the app delivers a serious dose of inspiration and some good energy.

“(The app is) all about peace, love, hope and what I call the wonder of creation … I’m finding that people just love good inspiration. They love to feel good,” Hillman declared. “I believe in the power of peace and love and the goodness of people and that is all the app is about.”

The postings include famous quotes from “masters” such as Gandhi and Mother Teresa, mixed with Hillman’s own writings and poetry. Thousands have signed up to hear the uplifting messages, spread across different categories that include peace, love, hope, reflections and life.

With no set formula, Hillman lets the messages take him where they will. Whether from famous people or unknowns, quotes impart wisdom such as “Life is like a bowl of ice cream. Enjoy it before it melts away,” or “Every act of kindness is the heart rejoicing.”

“There is so much struggle in the world,” Hillman said. “There has always been so much struggle in the world. But the more complicated the world gets, the more careful we have to be. Peace and love are essential to our future and our way of thinking and our way of being. Otherwise we are going to go in the wrong direction. It’s more than peace and love. It’s respect for others around us and our planet.”

The application was germinated from the success of Hillman’s Facebook page, of a similar nature to the app, which has generated 7,000 fans. Wanting to broaden the site’s reach, he decided to branch out into an app and contacted a local design tech company.

The app is geared toward anyone – any age, any walk of life, anyone that can find meaning in the affirming messages and uplifting inspirations.

“With all of my writing, I’ve always made sure that they can be enjoyed by people of all ages,” Hillman revealed. “My goal has always been less is more. I write them in a style that is very simple and powerful and motivating but an adult or child could understand them and relate to them.”

Hillman was a child of the ‘60s and it shows. Growing up in Haight-Ashbury, Calif., he was right in the middle of the peace and love flower power movement during his impressionable teen years.

“Those values (of the 1960s) have stuck with me over the years and with the economy going down and my business going up and down, I said you know what, it is never too late to have a dream. And so I said I’m going to try to bring back the whole peace and love from the 60s. There are a lot of people doing it and I said let me try it my way,” he said.

Since its inception in 2009, Hillman’s company has sought to create products that embody peace and love. And he is doing more love of his own, giving half of his business’s net income to charity.

“(My hope is) it reaches a lot of people and it just really makes people feel good. If they are down, they can open it and hopefully get inspired and read some writing that will uplift them and help them through the day,” Hillman said.

Believing “what goes around comes around” and “life is short,” Hillman has chosen to offer the app for free. The app is available on mobile devices such as Apple, Android and other tablet devices, and can be downloaded here.
