New York Fashion Week Fall 2012: Kimberly Ovitz

Dark themes seemed to be a theme for Fall 2012 collections, and Kimberly Ovitz jumped on board with the trend. Always leaning toward a modern edginess that uses clean, unique silhouettes, the designer was inspired by warriors this season. She particularly focused on Lisbeth Salander, a fictional character from Steig Larsson’s novel “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.”

The collection shown at New York Fashion Week was an endless display of tough, head-to-toe all black ensembles that proved the basic shade isn’t boring. Ovitz created exciting layers of black elements, which found dimension by juxtaposing soft and hard textures. At the same time, structured pieces competed with fluid lines. It was a brilliant play on contradiction, both within looks and throughout the collection as a whole.

The talented designer crafted origami leather jackets in shimmering polished threads as well as slick, framed motorcycle jackets. Strong blazers were paired with fitted, cropped trousers while enveloping outerwear matched with brushed velvet pants. Soft, cascading column dresses with high necklines or strategically draped crossovers challenged perfectly fitted, velvet long-sleeved minidresses. Matte wool and other lackluster effects came with glossy surfaces or sheer panels.

Alongside the dark coordinates, Ovitz incorporated a few other murky shades. Earth-tone hues were featured in a small set of flowing floor-length dresses, including a number that was detailed with faux fur slung over the shoulder. Unsaturated tones such as reddish browns and purples appeared in loose, carefree jerseys.

Contrasting elements isn’t a new concept, but Ovitz developed the idea nicely with the tough girl in mind while still maintaining a noticeable balance. And surely, a vengeful heroine or even an evil villain would have no problem stepping into the right frame of mind in any of these chic possibilities.
