Next Generation Project:  ‘Docking Stations’ to Utilize Wave Energy in NYC

Imagine New York City with an extension of waterfront real estate that could not only create more outdoor space for New Yorkers, but also generate an abundance of clean energy created by the tidal action!! Wow—what an eco-friendly, modern and totally LUX stroke of genius had some forward thinking change agents!

This original design prospectus is only one of the ingenious ideas we have chosen to highlight from this year’s ‘Next Generation Design Competition.’

Created by Richard Garber and Brian Novello, both GRO Architects, proposed these ‘Docking Stations’ structures to be made to adapt to the existing piers to extend them further into the river to leverage enough circumference for energy generation. This not only allows for more ‘green space’ for people to enjoy, but it also creates tidal pools for the wildlife!!

Much work has been done in reclaiming access to New York City’s 578 miles of waterfront; and this relationship of the river to the city, not simply its edges, is at the core of our proposal. What if the creation of a modular docking system to expand public access to the rivers and create recreational opportunities could actually produce energy by utilizing the flow of river current? Energy produced could then be fed back to the city’s power grid through existing underground transmission lines to power urban infrastructure, in this case streetlamps.—via Metropolismag.com

As you can see LUX Nation, these inventive and creative ideas to both help our planet and leverage the existing opportunities that exist is the essence of what the ‘Next Generation Design Competition’ is aimed at generating!! Inspiring people around the world to submit ingenious ideas that make an eco-difference!! If you would like to learn more about other designs and get empowered to think outside the box check out Next Generation 2009!

What do you think LUX Nation? Would this be an idea worth exploring?? Do you believe this is an eco-LUX solution that is viable???
