Sexy Socialite Elena Basescu, Runs for European Parliament

It seems Italy’s Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, called for new faces to join the race for the European parliamentary elections and one attractive socialite heard the calling. Elena Basescu is the daughter of Traian Basescu, President of Romania, and now she is looking to represent her country as an independent in the elections.

The European Parliament is elected every five years by member states’ citizens. As part of the European Union, it works together with the Council of the European Union and forms the ‘bicameral legislative branch ‘of the EU. It has been described as ‘one of the most powerful legislatures in the world.’ In total, there are 785 Members of the European Parliament.

Some question Basescu’s intellectual power and ability to be the best representative considering her lack of expertise. Although, others speculate that there is more going on then what the media has currently portrayed. She has a degree in economics and has served as a part of her father’s Democratic Liberal Party.

European law is made by the European Parliament, acting alongside the Council of Ministers, which is drawn from the cabinets of member governments, with farm ministers coming up with agricultural reform and environment ministers meeting to decide new green laws. This delicate balancing act between elected institutions like the parliament and the non-elected commission has become cumbersome since the Euro club was expanded to 27 member countries, taking in the central European and Baltic States as well as Romania and Bulgaria.—org-europeennes2009.rfi.fr

It seems Basescu, a former model, has a social life that has her nicknamed the ‘Romanian Paris Hilton.’ Being a youthful 28, and extremely beautiful, this gregarious beauty has earned quite the rep for being a ‘party girl.’ Basescu’s reputation may be great media exposure, however it just might cost her the vote for the parliament seat.

Most will not contend with her beauty, but many are unsure of her ability to win a seat considering some of her rivals. She was able to obtain the 200,000 signatures needed to be considered in the election though and we will all soon find out on June 7th whether the heiress is voted in!
