Spring 2014: The Denim on Denim Trend

Denim will never go out of style, it is timeless and a closet staple. Designers have played around with the denim trend by creating denim-on-denim looks for Spring/Summer 2014 runway collections. Check out our three favorite denim-on-denim looks from the runway and how you can incorporate this trend into your wardrobe.

An easy way to wear the denim-on-denim trend is pairing a light-wash piece with a dark-wash piece for a look that features a stark difference in denim washes. Designer Barbara Bui created the look with a dark denim skinny jean with a lighter trench-style coat; DKNY showcased a sand-washed overall with a dark blazer; and the Parsons The New School for Design presented an oversized coat and pant combination of a matching acid-like wash with the original wash peeping through the folds and seams for a unique look. If you already have a light denim top or button down shirt, you can style it with a dark jean to wear this trend.

The matching crop top and high waist skirt trend has been sweeping the fashion world, and it is exciting to see how designers created this look through the use of denim. Sachin + Babi designed a sporty collared tank top with a large zipper closure and matching pleated skirt; Veronica Beard created a unique button-down top and mini skirt with intricate stitching details; and although not a top and skirt combo, Veronique Leroy created a matching zebra embroidered, dark denim moto vest and dress set. Create the look with a top and bottom or jacket and dress of the same denim wash.

Mix and match denim by styling pieces of the same wash but with different design details. Draw inspiration from Ellus' striking all-white denim, metallic stitched, and crystal-adorned look by styling an all-white denim look of either an elaborately detailed jacket with simple jeans, or a standard white jacket with destroyed or embellished jeans. Oh Boy mixed a patched up and studded denim vest and jean of the same wash, but donning a tribal print. And Wunderkind created a bold animal print denim jacket paired with jeans of the same sand wash but with a fringe detail at the hem.
