Fashion Week style: Daytime Chic

During Fashion Week, New York ladies start their fashion itineraries first thing in the morning. Down that cup of joe and it’s off to your first show. Although some shows are more formal than others, more and more up-and-coming designers are popping up shop around Lincoln Center. Plus, there’s tons of events around town that don’t call for 5-inch heels or a black cocktail dress. Although it’s nice to pack as many Hervé Léger essentials as you can, sometimes a maxi can go a long way.

The best thing about this maxi by Mara Hoffman is that it’s not your typical jersey, spaghetti strap casual dress. This isn’t the same dress you wore in the Bahamas. Made in stretchy silk with a boatneck and a beautiful open back, these full-length look could easily transition from day to night. Just switch up the accessories, going for more metal, and opt for some pumps and you’re ready to party. Plus, who can turn down a hue called “Pow Wow Navy”?

Even though long dresses don’t show off the legs, you can still have height. Go for a espadrille, wedge or a pump with a touch of funk. These Opal Wedges by Diane von Furstenburg are an absolute style staple. They’re timeless in a classic style, yet modern with the gold zipper up the back. The wooden heel adds a tribal aspect, which is congruent with the printed geometric, Batik-look of the dress. They’re great with a maxi since they won’t be flopping around, making them practically trip-proof—which would be a total FW faux-pas!

Since the neck is off-limits, opt for accessories that play up the arms. Cocktail rings and bangles are good options and a pair of great earrings never hurt. Bunda Boutique, a luxury jewelry brand out of Australia, makes a great black resin bangle. The shape is bold and adds drama, which is proportional to the maxi. Small bangles would look off kilter with the volume of the dress. For a touch of gold, add this style steal by Forever 21—the Exquisite Saucer Ring. The geometric shapes and faux gem stone add some interest and spice up the look of the outfit, without causing too much commotion with the print of the dress.

Finally, who can can be daytime chic without the proper pair of shades? Dolce & Gabbana’s square lenses are a classic pick. They’re modern, yet have a vintage sensibility about them. Couldn’t you see them on Jackie O.?
