LadyLUX 2010: A year in review
From interviews with icons to great up-and-coming designers, to stories on stylish events in New York and Los Angeles, LadyLUX has had a big year dedicated to cutting through the clutter and getting you exactly what you want.
LUX Exclusives
LadyLUX added a new tab to the website this year, LUX Exclusives, which is dedicated to original interviews and profiles. One-on-one features with designers such as Dolly Pearl, Pamela Love and Lauren G gave readers a glimpse into their processes, inspirations and ideas. In September, the chief executive officer of J. Crew, Mickey Drexler, sat down to chat about his newest location on Madison Avenue. Jerome C. Rousseau and TOMTOM Jewelry discussed their designs for the Disney film “TRON: Legacy,” revealing futuristic, fashion-forward footwear and accessories.
Besides profiles, LUX exclusives also include events, such as SewDown at Los Angeles Fashion Week, Sjobeck‘s show at Fred Segal, an Armani fashion show in Newport Beach, a chat with Marie Robinson about her salon opening in New York City, attending nonprofit events like Oceana & La Mer’s “Hamptons Splash Party” and hanging out with Cynthia Rowley in New York City while she hosted “FEED Shop-in-a-Shop.”
In September we lunched with our good friend Santiago Gonzalez of Nancy Gonzalez, when he told us about his new men’s line of accessories he was going to be debuting exclusively to Neiman Marcus and Bergodorf Goodmand beginning holiday season 2010. LadyLUX helped our friends at Oceana with their Summer SeaChange event in Laguna Beach by conducting “live” red carpet interviews via a digital feed and tweets, of course. Thank you Ted Danson!
In October, LadyLUX had the privilege to shop and talk with famed shoe icon, Manolo Blahnik.
In November, our editor wrote a feature on the future of Los Angeles Fashion Week, which included conversations with producers and designers, such as “Project Runway” star Mila Hermanovsky. And, our LA contributor discovered an amazing pop-up shop, The Detox Market on Abbot Kinney Boulevard.
LadyLUX also celebrated 2010 with a fashionable charity event, A Night of LUX, which raised more than $50,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Trends
From the runways to retail, LadyLUX dissected the biggest trends in fashion and showed how to translate looks from designers such as Chanel, Fendi or Prada into everyday pieces.
In Spring, furs, exotic prints and tailored suits were given center stage at New York, Milan and Paris fashion weeks. The couture presentations by Givenchy and Chanel made a hue stand out that usually tries its best to blend in: nude.
The October shows in Paris and NYC revealed trends for the year ahead – ruffles, sheers and oodles of femininity.
At department stores this year, lucite jewelry, leopard everything, Native American-inspired accessories and chunky wedges were all over the shelves—and the not to be forgotten, the ever-so-chic, minaudiere.
After glancing at the tabloids and seeing that celebs have some serious airport fashion, our intern conjured up a style guide with fashionable, comfortable options for your next flight. After arriving at your exotic destination, there’s a good chance our Vintage-Inspired Swim Suit post will solve your poolside fashion problems.
To get some outsider advice, LadyLUX recruited a blogger to share her style inspiration. Megan Averbuch, a New York City stylist and the founder of Belles & Rebelles, gets inspired by Grecian goddesses.
Radar
LadyLUX’s Radar section offers up the biggest news stories on the Web pertaining to fashion, digital media, beauty and lifestyle. From the release of the second “Sex and the City” film to Fashion’s Night Out, 2010 has been a buzzworthy year.
Yves Saint Laurent made a splash this summer with the reinvention of a classic perfume, Opium, into Belle d’Opium.
In July, Tavi Gevinson, the 14-year-old blogger of Style Rookie, made headlines when she styled her first shoot for Blackbook Magazine. The chatter didn’t quell when word spread of the model, Real Housewife of New Jersey daughter, Christine Staub.
As always, as time passes, more companies are becoming more digitally savvy. Brands such as Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Nordstrom and Levi’s had virtual makeovers—from their websites to their social media presence. Marc Jacobs created a cutting-edge, interactive website that feels more as if you’re shopping in a virtual world full of tatted up hipsters, instead of on your browser.
Gucci discovered that its market doesn’t always want to walk to a brick-and-mortar store. The company changed up its website to include portals to Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. Nordstrom did the same with a socially conscious re-design. Levi’s not only tackled appearances online, but added another source of branding with its”Curve ID” jeans, which fit the shape of your body, instead of merely the size.
It was also a year of goodbyes as some fashion faces left their posts, and the world watched to see who would fill their shoes. The saddest of all, of course, was the loss of Alexander McQueen, who passed away on Feb. 11. Sarah Burton became creative director of McQueen in March. However, most goodbyes were in the form of departures.
Chief executive officer of Neiman Marcus, Burt Tanksy retired in September after 50 years in the industry. Bonnie Takhar, CEO of Halston for the past three years, left the company in November.
Wow, what a year! As LadyLUX says, Live.Love.LUX. Looking forward to 2011 and its infinite possibilities.
