Miami Beach Hosting 2013’s Art Basel

Art Basel is coming to Miami once again. In December, Art Basel will showcase its sectors in Miami Beach. The public sector theme is Social Animals and this sector will be displayed at Miami’s Collins Park. The park will be transformed into an outdoor exhibition space.

Participating in the exhibition will be 24 artists who will be featuring more than 30 large-scale sculptures in the park. The grouping of the sculptures will turned into a temporary community itself in hopes of increasing social interaction among visitors. The show’s theme of Social Animals, which is derived from Aristotle, will be seen in a variety of works. A live performance on opening night will include a Catholic confessional within Collins Park.

Traditional artwork will be on display throughout the show as well, with some artists focusing heavily on symbols of pop culture. Natural materials such as petrified wood and steel will be seen in this sector in the form of sculptures and installations.

Opening night will include special events such as Katie Gilmore’s new performance, “Only One Like You”. Opening night is December 4 from 8:30 - 10 p.m. The Basel’s public sector is free to the public and will be on exhibit from December 4-8.
